MAKING CONNECTIONSThis is a featured page

Connections - Mental Health Connections We know that there are connections between conditions like epilepsy, autism and psychosis and the food and drugs that we put into our bodies.
We want to understand more about these connections. But it's not straightforward and we must be careful to avoid jumping to conclusions.

Here are 2 simple examples of

possible connections.
A. Ammonia is a side effect of some anti-convulsants
B. Ammonia can create excess free glutamate in the brain.
C. Some seizures and psychotoc episodes are thought to be glutamate induced.
A. Many children have the MMR vaccination
B. Some children display symptoms of Autism shortly after having the MMR vaccination.
It would be IRRESPONSIBLE
  • anti-convulsants triggers schizophrenia or seizures
But it would be RIGHT to
to conclude that...
  • The MMR vaccine causes Autism
want to ask more questions!

So... let's not dismiss the evidence completely, as there is some truth in there somewhere. The conclusions may be true for some people under some circumstances. And if a connection like this helps just a single person, then it doesn't really matter if the argument is logically flawed or not, does it?

These are big questions that should never be taken lightly. But just a little more evidence might be sufficient to make a case. It might be, say, evidence of a change in diet. Here's an example of what you might say.

"I read somewhere that artificial sweeteners have been reported as making people feel ill. I suffer from migraines and seizures and so I decided to trial a diet that eliminates aspartame. My migraines stopped xxx days later. When I mistakenly had saccharine in my tea, the migraines came back within xx hours. It took xxx days to be free of them again."

Keep the above examples in mind when you use this site. What we need from each other is this:
  1. Your anecdotes, without conclusions being drawn, but with any evidence of a change in condition that appears to be connected to your 'intervention', such as a change in treatment or diet.
  2. Your conclusions or hypotheses, based on what you have observed or read.
  3. Your suggestions about what we might do.
  4. And we VERY much need the input of SPECIALISTS to use their scientific or clinical knowledge and expertise to authenticate, or discount, what is being said or suggested.

Now look at the threads below (these and others will all appear on the Discussions page)
Do you see any that you might reply to? If not, then create a new one. (First, check that you are signed in.)

If you wish to tell a long story that is likely to lead to a lot of discussion, or is an ongoing saga, you can either use a new thread or add a new page under this one, giving the page a unique and meaningful name, like "John Taylor's GFCF diet."

Feel free to consider what others have said works for them. But note that one person is not the same as another. And if you are on medication, you should speak to your health adviser first.
